MPs are talking about lidos
We wanted to draw your attention to a fantastic debate on lidos in Parliament on Wednesday, led by Andrew Pakes MP, who campaigned vigorously for Peterborough Lido. Fifteen MPs spoke passionately about the value of lidos and the need for strategic investment.
From our point of view at Cirencester Open Air Swimming Pool, the discussion really struck a chord.
Across the country, MPs were talking about something we see every day. Outdoor pools are far more than places to swim. They are part of a community’s identity, somewhere people connect, stay active and build lifelong memories. That is certainly true here in Cirencester, and it is clear we are not alone.
There was also a shared recognition that many pools are facing real challenges. We are especially mindful of our neighbours in Stroud, who are dealing with uncertainty at the moment, and they are just one example among many communities working hard to safeguard these much-loved spaces.
What came through strongly is that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Different models work in different places. For us, operating as a charity, with a dedicated volunteer base, professional management and NPLQ qualified lifeguards, is a model that is working well. It allows us to stay rooted in the community while providing a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.
That said, like many others, we always keep a careful eye on how we run things. Managing energy costs in particular has become increasingly challenging, especially with current events in the Middle East continuing to have a real impact on prices. Alongside staffing and ongoing maintenance, these pressures are a constant consideration in keeping an outdoor pool open and thriving. We see that not as a burden, but as an ongoing responsibility to look after something that matters deeply to so many people.
Overall, it was encouraging to hear just how much these pools are valued across the country. It reinforces what we already know. Open air pools are not just about swimming. They are about community, wellbeing and shared pride in the places we live.
